href=\"https:\/\/createlet.com\/best-cheap-colored-pencils\/\">cheap set of colored pencils<\/a> \u2013 surely there has to be more that goes into creating a colored pencil than just wood and lead right?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To be quite honest, I was completely surprised how involved the production process actually was\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2026and equally surprised that companies don&#8217;t actually charge more!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today we are going to go over what colored pencils are made of along with sharing a video we found from the &#8220;How It&#8217;s Made&#8221; folks (remember that show?!) giving you a behind-the-scenes look at just how the top brands go about making their colored pencils.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, let&#8217;s go ahead and dive into this deeply complicated process and you will need 4 key ingredients:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Wood<\/li><li>Pigments<\/li><li>Binders<\/li><li>Extenders<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Let&#8217;s take a look at how each one of this is critically important:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Wood<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Naturally the wood barrel of the colored pencil is an essential ingredient in holding the lead core together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, in recent years, this traditional casing has started to get challenged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Koh-I-Noor-Progresso-Woodless-Colored-Pencil\/dp\/B00PV0XF2E?tag=createlet-20\" rel=\"nofollow\">woodless colored pencils<\/a> making their way on to the market, along with even the most popular brands embracing 100% sustainable wood sources, more and more companies are looking to slightly alter how colored pencils are made.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pigments<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the most instantly noticeable and important qualities when it comes to colored pencils will be the pigment(s).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pigments can vary greatly from one brand to the next and even one color from another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When it comes to cheap vs. professional colored pencils \u2013 <strong>the pigment will be the largest difference in both price and application.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pigment concentration in higher end brands produce <strong>much more vibrant and striking results.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Secondly, the types of pigments sourced also have an impact on a particular brands lightfastness rating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When looking at artist grade brands like Caran d&#8217;Ache, you will find color charts that not only explain the number of pigments used in each colored pencil, but also their respective lightfastness rating:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"751\" height=\"351\" src=\"https:\/\/createlet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Caran-dache-lightfastness-rating.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2733\" srcset=\"https:\/\/createlet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Caran-dache-lightfastness-rating.jpg 751w, https:\/\/createlet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Caran-dache-lightfastness-rating-301x141.jpg 301w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 751px) 100vw, 751px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Take the <em>Green ochre (025)<\/em> colored pencil for example.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This pencil <strong>contains 5 different pigments<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>PY3<\/li><li>PY42<\/li><li>PY13<\/li><li>PO62<\/li><li>PBk6<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This tells us that there is a lot of different colors coming out of the lead when you make a mark on the paper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, given that this one isn&#8217;t considered to be just a &#8216;pure pigment&#8217;, it may appear slightly duller when compared to others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This information can be extremely useful when using colored pencils as you can <strong>find like colors that share the same exact pigment composition<\/strong> \u2013 so in our example above, green ochre, yellow ochre, raw sienna, brown ochre, and olive brown all contain the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.artiscreation.com\/yellow.html#.XEDjFVxKj-g\">yellow PY42 pigment<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, mixing these colors together would make a really smart and harmonious choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Very cool.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lastly, is the lightfastness rating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are doing artwork that is to be on display for years to come, then lightfastness rating is important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What&#8217;s equally important to know is that <strong>no single brand can create perfect lightfastness ratings<\/strong> for all of their colors.&nbsp; This is due to the chemical structure of the organic pigment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some naturally are more prone to fading when exposed to light when compared to others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But in general, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.astm.org\/Standards\/D4303.htm\">ASTM does provide some guidance when determining lightfastness<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They are defined as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Very poor lightfastness = V (less than 2 years)<\/li><li>Poor lightfastness = IV (2-15 years)<\/li><li>Fair lightfastness = III (15-50 years)<\/li><li>Very good lightfastness = II (50-100 years)<\/li><li>Excellent lightfastness = I (over 100 years)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Above information was sourced from <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lightfastness\">Wikipedia<\/a>.&nbsp; <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>List is ordered by the following: Description | ASTM rating | Years before fading<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another metric to determine lightfastness is the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.drb-mattech.co.uk\/uv%20blue%20wool.html\">blue wool scale<\/a> \u2013 but during our research we are yet to come across a colored pencil that follows those guidelines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Binders<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Binders, also <a href=\"http:\/\/www.essentialchemicalindustry.org\/materials-and-applications\/paints.html\">sometimes referred to as resins<\/a>, are essentially the glue that holds the pigment in place when mixed together.&nbsp; This ensures that there will be an even distribution of pigment throughout the entire lead core of your pencils.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Binders can vary greatly from being <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gum_arabic\">gum arabic<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Paraffin_wax\">paraffin wax<\/a>, to even an oily compound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The type of binder used can drastically change how the pencil performs when the lead interacts with the paper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Extenders<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Used in tandem with binders, extenders help to ensure that there is a firm body to the lead.&nbsp; The amount of extenders used in a pencil can dictate whether the lead will feel soft and buttery or one that is a bit more rigid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, the added use of extenders can help push down the price of the pencil by decreasing both the binder and pigment needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Subsets_Of_Colored_Pencil_Types\"><\/span>Subsets Of Colored Pencil Types<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" src=\"https:\/\/createlet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/colored-pencil-composition.jpg\" different compositions within the binders when it comes to colored pencils, we wanted to expand on this a little bit further since its important when understanding how colored pencils are made.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Within the marketplace, you have two primary types of colored pencils:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>wax-based<\/li><li>oil-based<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Here&#8217;s a bit more detail on each:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Wax-Based Leads<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>By far the most popular type of colored pencil will be those with a wax-based core.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This type of colored pencil goes on smooth and creates a relatively slick surface.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prized for their blending abilities, artists love these pencils as they can layer with relative ease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to being fairly easy to work with, wax-based colored pencils can also be used with solvents to completely dissolve the wax and pigment onto the paper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Common solvents used by professional artists will be either baby oil or <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Xylene\">xylene<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Based on our research, <a href=\"https:\/\/chemistry.stackexchange.com\/questions\/17109\/how-to-dissolve-candle-wax-paraffin\">xylene is a much more effective method<\/a> as its chemically opposite of the paraffin wax used within the colored pencils making for much more cleaner blends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Companies like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chartpak.net\/\">Chartpak<\/a> and others do make <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Original-Chartpak-Tri-Nib-Blender-Colorless\/dp\/B0026HC7GU?tag=createlet-20\" rel=\"nofollow\">xylene based blending pens<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lastly, one downside to wax-based colored pencils is that they experience wax blooms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This phenomenon occurs when the wax begins the oxidize after a few days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To counteract this, you can just simply use a dry cloth and wipe your drawing.&nbsp; If you really don&#8217;t want it to happen again, then a fixative will help seal off your drawing from any more air interacting with it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Oil Based Leads<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" src=\"https:\/\/createlet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/water-vs-oil-based-paint.jpg\" alt=\"water vs oil based paint\" class=\"wp-image-2594\" srcset=\"https:\/\/createlet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/water-vs-oil-based-paint.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/createlet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/water-vs-oil-based-paint-301x201.jpg 301w, https:\/\/createlet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/water-vs-oil-based-paint-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/createlet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/water-vs-oil-based-paint-600x400.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Opposite of wax-based colored pencils you will find oil-based colored pencils.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This variant on the colored pencil is much rarer and is only exclusive to a few brands \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Polychromos-36-Pencil-Studio-Set\/dp\/B000UEAKC4?tag=createlet-20\" rel=\"nofollow\">Faber-Castell Polychromos<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Rembrandt-Polycolor-Pencils-Assorted-2001720\/dp\/B0012EV8QI?tag=createlet-20\" rel=\"nofollow\">LYRA Polycolor&#8217;s<\/a> come to mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With this pencil providing buttery and slick results, the colors (according to some artists) appear more vivid than your typical wax-based color pencil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to color vibrancy, oil-based pencils will need different solvents (i.e. <a href=\"https:\/\/createlet.com\/mineral-spirits-vs-turpentine\/\">odorless mineral spirit or turpentine<\/a>) in order to dissolve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Using baby oil or xylene here will simply not work and may ruin the paper that you are drawing on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Can_You_Make_Colored_Pencils_At_Home\"><\/span>Can You Make Colored Pencils At Home?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>While there are countless &#8216;mamma&#8217; blogs hawking DIY solutions for everything under the sun, colored pencils are one of those products that you simply can&#8217;t cook up in your kitchen with sticks and wood dye.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sorry DIY&#8217;ers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The process of mixing pigment with binders and extenders along with inserting them into molds takes very specialized ingredients and tools in order to create a colored pencil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are into the whole DIY process though, perhaps you will want to take a look at either acrylic or oil painting where both raw oils, acrylic polymers, and pigments are
