artists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, here\u2019s a brief summary on some of the common lingo and things to be mindful of when making a selection:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Size<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Naturally the size of your paper will be important when selecting the perfect one for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As my mother always said while cooking \u2013 <strong>you can always add more, never less.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The same holds true when it comes to finding the perfect paper for your colored pencils.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In general, we recommend always going a size or two larger than you might be comfortable with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want a smaller scale drawing, you can simply remove the sheet from the pad and cut to size.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now naturally, if you plan on taking your sketch pad with you out in the field and you want to capture some subjects \u2013 a more discrete drawing pad will be preferred.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, take a moment to think what paper works best for the type of drawings you plan on making before buying.&nbsp; If unsure, a 9\u201d x 12\u201d is a standard sized pad in the world of colored pencil paper \u2013 and should work for most people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Paper Weight<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This is always a big factor when choosing paper for any application, colored pencils included.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The amount of heft that the paper has can be advantageous as it can withstand quite a bit of abuse before it begins to show any signs of fraying or tearing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you find when using your colored pencils that you are rather accident prone and have to reach for your kneaded eraser or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Faber-Castell-Faber-Castell-Perfection-Eraser\/dp\/B00TUFV3XY?tag=createlet-20\" rel=\"nofollow\">eraser pencil<\/a> (these things are really awesome \u2013 highly recommended to check out), <strong>a heavy weighted paper will resist any tearing.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, there is an upper and lower limit to how much weight you should go with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Generally speaking, we recommend that artists using colored pencils <strong>stick somewhere between 150 to 300 GSM*<\/strong> (about 90 to 140 lbs).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>*We like to use the metric system here on Createlet as we find it\u2019s a bit clearer and easier to explain when it comes to talking about paper.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img class=\"wp-block-heading\">Fiber<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The fiber of the paper itself can also have a measurable impact on how your colored pencils react.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you like to layer your drawings, then a rougher paper that is based on a cotton or wood pulp will be preferred.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, for those who like a much smoother surface, then one that is made from vellum will be a bit href=\"https:\/\/createlet.com\/best-paper-for-acrylic-paint\/\">top rated papers for acrylic<\/a> as it provides a large amount of texture and tooth on the surface \u2013 making it great for watercolors to work with effortlessly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some colored pencil artists do like rougher cold press paper as it <strong>has advantages when it comes to layering.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the other hand, <strong>standard drawing paper or copy paper that you are likely familiar with will be hot pressed<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hot pressed paper will have a <strong>light grippy texture<\/strong> to it that can handle a few layers at most but is generally considered to be a slightly smoother surface when compared to cold pressed paper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here&#8217;s a little class=\"wp-block-heading\">Archival Qualities<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Should you be doing your colored pencil drawing as a commissioned piece or simply want your drawing to last a lifetime, then you will want to get a paper that <strong>has some archival qualities<\/strong> built into it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most notably, you will want a paper that is <strong>acid free<\/strong>, <strong>chlorine free, absent of optical brighteners<\/strong>, and <strong>spiral bound<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These types of papers will resist yellowing and withstand the test of time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The reason why we recommend spiral bound papers for preservation is that there will be no glue touching the paper \u2013 which in often cases can contain ingredients that deteriorate the paper over many years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Does this mean you should avoid glue bound paper completely?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can simply cut away the binding side of the paper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Budget<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When reviewing papers suited for colored pencils, we found that the average cost per sheet was about $0.64 \u2013 with a range between $0.17 (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Canson-Heavyweight-Texture-Sizing-Sheets\/dp\/B00QJVYCQC?tag=createlet-20\" rel=\"nofollow\">Canson XL Series Mix Media Paper Pad<\/a>) to $1.40 (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Fabriano-Artistico-Press-Sheet-Block\/dp\/B0055D250U?tag=createlet-20\" rel=\"nofollow\">Fabriano Artistico<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Given that only a few companies sell their paper by the sheet, you will find that pads of paper range anywhere between $9 and $28 (of course number of sheets included varies greatly).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whether you are a beginner or a professional, you likely know how much papers can really vary in quality \u2013 and a lot of this depends on the type of colored pencils you are using.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Given that colored pencils lead can vary greatly from one brand to another, we do <strong>recommend testing out a few different pads<\/strong> and see which one works best for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unfortunately, what might be great for Prismacolor pencils may not work nearly as well for say Derwent ProColours or Faber Castell Polychromos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\"
